One of my biggest personal goals for 2020 was to blog more consistently. I’ve been working on catching up on some book reviews and today I’m sharing my review of Big Friendship by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman. It was my July 2020 Book of the Month selection.

Review & Thoughts
Big Friendship: How We Keep Each Other Close by Aminatou Sow & Ann Friedman
The main theme of this book is… you guessed it, friendship! There’s something so wonderful about friendships and spending time with people who just get you and love you for you. After five years together with my husband (of a about a year and a half) I would say that he became my best friend early on when we began dating. I think the relationship you have with your spouse or significant other is incredibly important but it’s a different type of friendship than one you have with a close girlfriend. My female friendships have ebbed and flowed over the years and have changed during the seasons of my life.
Miscellaneous things that I related to and appreciated in this book:
- I love that Amina understands the joy of receiving mail and enjoys sending postcards to friends during her travels. I connected with Ann’s recollection of using a library card to check out tons of books – if you’re a book lover, you’re also probably guilty of checking out way more books than you can realistically read in the 2-3 week time-frame you have on checked out books but there’s just something about the stories that draw you in and it makes you want to read them all.
- Do I judge a book by it’s cover? You bet I do. Only been misled or disappointed once that I can recall.
- Important characteristics of friendship: shared values, loyalty, and dependability.
In a Nutshell: An entertaining deep dive on the inter-workings of a Big female friendship. Relatable and completely honest, this book is worth the read.
My Rating: 4 / 5 Stars

Book Blurb:
A close friendship is one of the most influential and important relationships a human life can contain. Anyone will tell you that! But for all the rosy sentiments surrounding friendship, most people don’t talk much about what it really takes to stay close for the long haul.
Now two friends, Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman, tell the story of their equally messy and life-affirming Big Friendship in this honest and hilarious book that chronicles their first decade in one another’s lives. As the hosts of the hit podcast Call Your Girlfriend, they’ve become known for frank and intimate conversations. In this book, they bring that energy to their own friendship—its joys and its pitfalls.
An inspiring and entertaining testament to the power of society’s most underappreciated relationship, Big Friendship will invite you to think about how your own bonds are formed, challenged, and preserved. It is a call to value your friendships in all of their complexity. Actively choose them. And, sometimes, fight for them.
