Are you looking to update your home but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you need a little design direction for a simple update or you may be starting off with a blank slate in a new home and you’re looking to create an overall cohesive look. Either way, you should consider starting your process with looking at your colors!
I recently learned about color coaching through a close friend and was intrigued by the idea. You can hire a professional consultant to come view your home where they will analyze the colors you currently have and provide you with guidance on how to update your home’s colors. From the conversation I had with my friend and through a bit of research online I discovered that a color consultant or coach is essentially a design professional that will view your home and provide an analytical color palette recommendation for your paint, furniture, and decor.
If you’re looking to refresh the outside of your home for example, they might take the color of your roof and architecture style into consideration and provide appropriate color recommendations. If you’re looking to update the interior, they can offer a color palette for your overall home or different palettes for each room to achieve an overall cohesive look and vibe. They can provide color palette recommendations based on everything in your home, from furniture to small decor, and offer ideas on different ways to update your home.
Whether you call it a color coach, color consultant, or a colorist, seeking professional advice is a great approach to updating your home, as many professionals can analyze your home in less than an hour when it would take you hours or days to do similar research. Individuals in the professional design field tend to have an innate eye for what looks good, in addition to having training and experience with putting their skills to the test.
If you’re not ready to make the plunge by hiring a consultant, there’s plenty of books you can browse for ideas and recommendations for a Do It Yourself adventure. If you live in a temporary place and you’re not able to change the paint or you’re not interested in having your home painted, you can still update your home with new furniture and decor.
Discount home stores like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are fantastic places to find beautiful pieces for less. I recently updated our bedroom by replacing our bedside table lamps. I found Restoration Hardware inspired lamps for a fraction of the price. It’s amazing what a difference a small change can make in your home!

That’s a fun idea to change colors seasonally!
I have to admit I try and have most of the main things in on home quite plain and then I can use accessories to bring in different colours as and when I want.
I have never thought to look at TJ Maxx and HomeGoods for lamps. I so want to replace our bedside lamps as I really dislike them and want to refresh the room. I’ll have to go searching!
You definitely should check out HomeGoods, they have so many fabulous options! These lamps were only $40 each, when a similar style at RH was around $150
I am decorating challenged. No joke. I always say I want a more put together home, but have no clue where to start. So glad you shared this because I need it for sure! I love how just a lamp can make such a difference!

Wow, I’m totally in love with your home furniture. Such beautiful palette of colors, they gave very lively feeling.
My entire house has parchment walls. I could really use the help of a colorist.
That second picture with the blue side tables is such a beautiful room! We have a very similar headboard to that so maybe I need to get a chaise at the end of the bed like in the picture!
I love those blues! Some great ideas and tips here to freshen up! Thanks for sharing!

I love this post and I am very interested in the process of becoming a color coach. It seems like such a great idea, and a very easy way to update a home. The blues are a great color so fresh a clean, perfect for year round use too. Great job.
I’m currently in the process of remodeling my home. Luckily I work in project management at a full-service firm and have received lots of tips from the interior designers and architects. I just picked out colors for my wall and they contract so nicely with my dark hardwood floors. Colors do matter! Great post.
Adoring all of this home decor hun! It so stunning even with just the hint of colors here and there. I love it!!!
spring is coming up and i am looking to make some changes at home. this is a good reference post.
We’re actually shopping for a new home now and are thinking about hiring a decorator when we do find a place. Perhaps a color coach is all we need!

I’m going to be decorating a lot with navy soon and I can’t wait. These are wonderful tips.
This is a great post because I really like neutral colors and sometimes need help adding color. I love the blue.
Beautiful pictures! I’ll have to look into a color consultant. We will start our remodeling soon and the first section is the removing / replacing the floor. I love the blue in the pictures. My accent color is more of a minty green which I fell in love with a couple years ago. Nice post!
I have been getting some things to leave up my room. Your post was really helpful with the before and after photos.
Absolutely love those lapus mugs! Are they hand painted??
It’s always a great idea to refresh your room with a pop of color! And I love HomeGoods for these items!
My best friend is an interior decorator, so she has indoctrinated me with the importance of color. One day my dream would be to have a sizable wad of cash in my pocket, and to head out with her to shop after shop…to find just the right furniture and accent pieces to make my home reflect my tastes. A girl can dream.
We’re redoing a few rooms in our house right now and are definitely bringing way more color into the space than we ever have. I definitely have my doubts about our ability to match the right tones- just might have to hire a color consultant before things get too wild!
I love having white walls and pops of color in accessories. On a huge yellow kick right now!
I’m definitely going to check some of those books out! We recently moved into our home and I’m currently trying to find the best color combinations. It’s tough but I’m enjoying the challenge. Lol
I had no idea that you can hire a color consultant that can come to your home and tell you what changes to do in order to blend the colors beautifully inside your house. I actually never thought about how colors can affect the look of a house. Very interesting post.
I believe colors are the essence of life. I myself have an interior decorating background, I always tell my clients to break the monotonous by mixing in some contrasting colors. Love your ideas, really inspirational.
Your color selections look great. I don’t really have color themes in our home – we pretty much go with functional over beautiful – maybe once the kids are grown…
Adding pops of color with accessories is a great and affordable way to bring color into a room. Great ideas!
I love the pops of blue. We just moved into a new home and I’ve got the decorating bug. I want to try new colors and things. We’ve always had so much red in the home and now I want something brighter and that feels more fresh.
Awesome tips. I love working with colors in decorating. It’s such a great way to make a room pop.
Getting professional advice is a great idea! It can make a huge difference to get an outsiders perspective!
Isn’t it amazing just changing something like throw pillows can really change the way your room looks. I love the idea of updating with color.
Oh wow! Your room looks beautiful! And I love those blue accents! So pretty!
I have been thinking about updating the colors in y house. This post was perfect to find, thank you for the tips!!
I’ve been thinking about hiring a consultant for a while now. I wish I would get around to it because I love the bursts of color with white.
I have always wished I was a natural at adding in bursts of color. Maybe I’m too hard on myself but it never looks like the examples above and that’s what I want!
I literally just updated a couple of rooms in my home. I love using a burst of color and that’s a lot of what we did with the changes.
These are gorgeous. I love the pops of navy and color throughout.
I like what you did in your room. It became more fabulous after!
These are some great ideas. I love the first bedroom you showed. And I love the pops of navy and color throughout.
I love this! You did an amazing job redecorating!
These are wonderful ideas! Color matching is something that many homeowners struggle with when decorating their homes. A good read to get started.
I would love to add color to my home. All my walls are white but, I do have some borders up in a couple rooms. I guess because I rent right now that I haven’t invested in that yet. I would love to have each room with a color or theme that flowed through the house though.
I love the glam bedroom with all the nail head details. Fancy!
Color coach sounds so interesting! I was always interested in the idea of Home decorator so I’m going to look into this. The pops of blue are perfect – love the coastal feel

I could definitely use more colors in the house. Although I would love to remove these mirrors from my ceiling wall which were there when I moved in. I think it would help to get someone else in and see what would work to change things around.
Great tips! Colour in my surroundings always helps lift my mood and we’ve added colour recently.
Choosing the right colour scheme certainly helps you to create the right mood and ambience. We have recently updated our living room and it has made so much difference to the light in our room.
We recently bought a new house, and I have been trying to piece together rooms and decorate more! I love the blue colors.
I love colors and my Instagram posts and blog is full of colors. A color scheme definitely changes the mood of the house 🙂
I have always believed in the concept of colors in the home and how they can affect your mood. I never liked darker wall shades such as even brown or coffee. White always works for me. I love the home decor to be in bright shades like pink or yellow and the curtains to be of a similar shade as the walls.
I love the bedroom with the headboard and ottoman bench,.
These were really great tips, adding pops of colours is a really good idea for a spruce up.
I love Home Goods for decorating the home! They have really reasonable priced items for SUPER affordable prices! Great place to start!
I love adding a little color into the room with some accent pillows or gold and silver accessories for a little sparkle. Great ideas.
