Today I’m sharing my 5 Star review on a new Cozy Mystery series by Ruby Loren. Penguins and Mortal Peril is the first book in the Madigan Amos Mystery series and I can’t wait to tell you all about it!
Penguins and Mortal Peril by Ruby Loren
My Review:
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is exactly what a cozy mystery should look like: suspense, murder, mystery, clues that make you second guess who it could be, drama, a potential love interest, and a climactic adventure that leads to finding out whodunnit.
This story takes place in a small zoo where Madi works as a zookeeper. She has a unique gift when it comes to understanding animals and when she trusts her gut instincts about what a particular animal needs, she’s rarely wrong. Reading about the penguin habitat made me think of that movie with Dane Cook and Jessica Alba called Good Luck Chuck. I loved reading about the animals and I felt like I was there watching it all happen. I loved reading this novel and kept reading to find out what would happen next. I believe the second book in the series will be released sometime in August and I can’t wait to see where Madi goes next!
This is the first novel I’ve read by Ruby Loren and it certainly won’t be the last. I was fortuitous in discovering her work as I’m a book blogger and was introduced to her review team through social media. I’m happy that I found her books and can’t wait to read more of them!

About the Book
Title: Penguins and Mortal Peril
Author: Ruby Loren
Published: July 2017
Book Blurb: When the penguin keeper is found dead at the bottom of the penguin pool, zookeeper Madigan Amos is determined to find out what happened to him… even if it means apprehending armed intruders, getting caught in the middle of a terrorist attack, and sparring with a machete wielding murderer.
The police struggle to conclude whether or not the death was accidental, but it’s not the only recent, unexplained happening at Avery Zoo. Since the tragic, avoidable death of a serval, animal rights activists have plagued the zoo. Activists with a reputation for extremism. Do they have something to do with the penguin keeper’s demise?
Madi also has her suspicions about two new zoo employees, but what exactly do they have to do with the goings on? Are they activist spies, or do they have their own scores to settle?
By the time Madi figures out things are not as they seem, she’s already in too deep. Someone has a hidden agenda, and they’re willing to kill to keep it a secret.
