I am thrilled to announce that I have recently made some wonderful connections in the bookish world and that you are about to read my very first author interview post!
In the wake of her latest novel launch, Single All the Way I had the opportunity to interview author Elaine Spires. Having newly been introduced to the author’s writing, I was bursting with questions along the lines of who she is as a writer and what inspires her to write. After perusing through her personal website and reading up about some of her work, I compiled five questions that I thought would not only interest me, but also interest my loyal readers.
Interview with Elaine Spires
As someone that has recently been introduced to your writing, I’d like to know how would you describe your novels to someone that has never read your work before?
I’m a writer of contemporary books which are humorous, sexy and romantic with travel and twists thrown in along the way.
What inspired you to start writing and what continues to inspire you?
I was inspired to write when I found I could write. I was a member of the Anna Scher Community Theatre for a long time and Anna always encouraged us to put on plays which I started writing and I really enjoyed the writing side of it. Then when I wrote and performed “What’s Eating Me” on the Edinburgh Fringes, I found that I couldn’t let go of my character Eileen and it developed to become my first book. The rest as they say is history.
I am continued to be inspired by the feedback I get from my readers. When they say they can identify with characters or that my words made them think, made them laugh or made them cry it’s a wonderful connection!
What book or author has had the largest impact on your life and your writing style?
I don’t feel that anyone has impacted on my style as I feel that it is very much my own style. I’ve always thought that Maeve Binchy was the most amazing story teller. I adore the way that she cleverly weaved characters in and out of her other books.
A book that impacted on me as a child was Little Women. It was the first time I ever cried over a book and realised that someone could move me to tears just through putting words on a page. An incredible talent.
It seems that your novels take your readers to the far reaches of exotic locale. If you could pack a bag and leave tomorrow for an all-expenses paid vacation, where would you go and what would you take with you?
If I were going to a city, it would be New York or Buenos Aires. If it was a sunny break somewhere it would be my beloved Antigua or Ibiza. I do love a beautiful beach. Formentera has incredible beaches. In fact I always used to say if I’m ever lost you would find me in Formentera.
I would take my Kindle because I couldn’t be anywhere without something to read, my Factor 50 sun tan lotion because I burn very easily and my bank card.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
As a general life lesson – I was once told to find something that you love doing and then find someone to pay you to do it!
The best advice I was given about being a writer was to just get on and do it. Get yourself out there, there is no room for procrastination. I was also advised to get a mentor and I consulted Nicola May who I really admire and learnt a lot from. In fact, Nicola has just brought out a short ebook called How to create and maintain your author profile plus increase your Amazon sales which is a really good and informative read.
