Debut novel written by Ella Harper, Pieces of You is a novel filled with romance and drama and is sure to make you smile, laugh and cry. Seriously though, make sure you have a box of tissues handy while reading the second half of the book!!
Throughout the novel, the reader is pushed and pulled from the present to the past, leading up to a truly dramatic, devastating and emotional finale. To be honest, I usually find novels that flip back and forth from present to past to be confusing and slightly frustrating, however, Harper’s novel is anything but. By creating a present-to-past format, the characters are developed in such a way that your initial views change drastically throughout the novel. You begin to see the different layers of the characters’ personalities and the history that leads up to the main events of the story. I became emotionally invested in this novel and while reading it, I felt a personal connection to Lucy and the important people in her life.
A major theme that struck me was the notion that you can’t judge other people’s lives if you don’t know and understand what they are going through. Sometimes it’s easy to be jealous of someone’s life or relationships, but often times, those things are anything but perfect under the surface. The main characters, Lucy and Luke, desperately want to conceive a child together. Their attempts to get pregnant-and carry a child to term-begin to get in the way of the once passionate relationship that they shared. Although I’ve never experienced many of the things that the characters go through, reading this novel made me feel like I could genuinely empathize with them, rather than just sympathize.
Things aren’t always as them seem and it is important not to judge others before you understand where they are coming from and what they are going through. Sometimes you will need to lean on someone’s shoulder and sometimes you need to offer someone else strength to overcome what they are going through. This novel reminds you that at the end of the day, life is precious and you shouldn’t let anything get in the way of enjoying and supporting the important people in your life. Pieces of You is an honest to goodness romance story about true love and it’s ability to overcome life’s unfortunate obstacles.
